States of Germany

1)  Baden-Württemberg - Joined the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in 1949.  It is about 13,500 square miles with a population of almost 11 million.
2)  Bavaria - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 27,000 square miles with a population of almost 12 million.
3)  Berlin - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is 344 square miles with a population of 3.4 million.
4) Brandenburg - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is about 11,000 square miles with a population of 2.6 million.
5) Bremen - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 155 square miles with a population of 660,000.
6) Hamburg - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 300 square miles with a population of 1.75 million.
7) Hesse - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 8,000 square miles with a population about 6 million.
8) Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is about 9,000 square mile with a population of about 1.7 million.
9) Lower Saxony - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 18,000 square miles with a population of about 8 million.
10) North Rhine-Westphalia - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 13,000 square miles with a population of about 18 million.
11) Rhineland-Palatinate - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 8,000 square miles with a population of about 4 million.
12) Saarland - Joined the FRG in 1957.  It is about 1,000 square miles with a population of about 1 million.
13) Saxony - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is about 7,000 square miles with a population of about 4.3 million.
14) Saxony-Anhalt - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is about 8,000 square miles with a population of about 2.5 million.
15) Schleswig-Holstein - Joined the FRG in 1949.  It is about 6,100 square miles with a population of about 2.8 million.
16) Thuringia - Joined the FRG in 1990.  It is about 6,000 square miles with a population of about 2.4 million.


These 16 states make up the 137,847 square miles of Germany whose population is an estimated 82 million.
